WHY BUILD A MONTESSORI SCHOOL?
While Apartheid is no longer the rule of law in South Africa, its effects and the resultant limited opportunities afforded to many along racial and socioeconomic lines are still apparent throughout many of the country's townships. Where the unemployment rate is over 25% and the level of entrepreneurial activity is among the lowest in the world, an innovative and accelerated pathway to higher education and professional success is imperative. Research has shown that many children within the townships are lacking the necessary skills for success when Entering Grade 1. Research also shows that students who perform below grade level by 3rd Grade are five times more likely to drop out of school, which further limits their opportunities for success. Therefore, we see a Montessori academy as not only an innovative education model but a hub for empowerment and productivity and success.
Through Love to Langa, the Montessori Academy in Cape Town will have a distinctive opportunity to play a leadership role in furthering the development of education and training activity in South Africa through partnerships with educators, government and local educational forums.
Learning from global models, grounded in research, the Love to Langa Montessori Academy will provide 200 children ages 3-6 with a Whole Child Approach, including incorporating trauma-informed care as well as mandatory essential parental participation and support.

The Build Progress
Land Acquisition - completed:
The Anglican Diocese of Cape Town made available 1500 square meters of land in Langa Township (.37 acres or approximately 16,000 square feet) to Love to Langa. The land has been fenced off and is awaiting the construction of the school. Love to Langa Board Member Kissmea Adams has been invited to join the Langa Advisory Committee, which is a great opportunity for Love to Langa to become a more integrative, collaborative partner with members of the Langa community. (further integrate into the fabric of the community), while continuing its practice of contributing to the future of the children through education.
Transformation to better education within the township:
Love to Langa aims to connect the Langa community to Montessori education. According the the American Montessori Association, “Given the freedom and support to question, to probe deeply, and to make connections, Montessori students become confident, enthusiastic, self-directed learners. They are able to think critically, work collaboratively, and act boldly—a skill set for the 21st century.”
Working towards a sustainable enterprise:
Love to Langa created the opportunity for seven would-be Montessori teachers to train in the Montessori way of Education. This is a unique offering in training-based entrepreneurship – which will help develop the capacity to produce highly-trained Montessori teachers to work in and run our school as well as being able to operate their own schools, in the future, with the intent to generate income.
Love to Langa has no paid staff, however we do secure consultants to facilitate Project Management for our large building projects as needed. Our Board of Directors approve all expenditures in this regard.
The below concept drawing shows the proposed school plan, including:
-Community Hall
-Store room and infirmary
-Office
-Foyer
-Five Classrooms
-Caretaker's Flat
-Playground
The budget for this project is USD $500,000 - an incredibly reasonable sum when you consider what we will be able to accomplish. Please join us in making this dream a reality! Love to Langa is a US-based 501(c)3 organization and all donations are fully tax deductible.
Donations can be made online with a credit card via the link below or if you would like to avoid the processing fee, please send your check to: Love to Langa, PO Box 104, Gladwyne, PA 19035.
